For example, at one point back in the 1980s, some
materialists proposed that the NDE was caused by a buildup of carbon
dioxide in the brain. Granted, this is not an intrinsically unreasonable
hypothesis. But subsequent research has shown (1) that many NDEs occur
without a buildup of carbon dioxide in the brain, and (2) that there are plenty
of cases of carbon dioxide in the brain without an accompanying NDE. So
the presence of carbon dioxide in the brain is neither necessary nor sufficient
for an NDE and, hence, has nothing to do with causing the experience.
