Grief is an emotional process that humans go through when someone close to them passes away. Although we tend to think of it as an emotion, in fact it is a collection of emotions, for it is a process that extends in time and changes shape, incorporating dierent feelings such as despair, anger, gratitude, love, sadness, or confusion.11 However, when we think of grief we usually have in mind an emotion that is primarily of sadness, an intense sorrow caused by the death of a loved one. We consider this sadness as the death-related emotion par excellence, and this is what comparative thanatologists who are in the grip of emotional anthropocentrism look for in animals.
