An annual subscription for NEJM or Paediatrics would give far better value for money than these meetings. With the slashing of budgets for study leave for both trainees and consultants/SAS staff in many Trusts, many attendees are paying out of their own pocket, and should be able to vote with their feet for poor quality/value presentations. The overpriced cost of conferences in the UK certainly needs addressing. I am not going to be popular for saying this but ....., the 3.5 days College meeting at York in 2008 would cost a Fellow £590 whilst the registration for the recent ESPR meeting at Prague for the same duration was 380 euros (£266), and including the cost of airfare and accommodation, it was still cheaper by £90 than the cost of registration at the College conference, let alone the extras!
