We discover by introspection the intimate story of our selves. Then, when we want to model the mind of someone else, we construct the other's mind in the image of our own. We assume the other to be a conscious subject who thinks and feels in the way we've learned that we do. Then we read into them the mental states that we would have if we were in their place, and we expect the thoughts and actions that flow from these states to follow the same path as they would for us. We can do this because—but only because—we've experienced these very states of mind ourselves and seen for ourselves how they connect A Phosphenes, blindsight, aesthetic preferences, social intelligence, theory of mind, even religious awe . . . each of these encounters gave me a different perspective on the problem and left me, as I see it today, with a piece or two of the solution. a What if life is a dream and death wakes us up?💀 A a The key thing about sensation, in contrast to perception, is that it is essentially body-centred, evaluative, and personal. It's almost as if you are expressing your bodily opinion about what the stimulation means to you: responding with a kind of inner smile, or wince, or frown. Indeed, as we'll see shortly, there's a solid reason it feels this way. I'll be arguing, as a central plank of the theory, that the vehicle for the brain's representation of sensation is in fact a form of covert bodily expression. You respond to sensory stimulation with the makings of an action— never completed— appropriate to what's happening and how you feel about it. And then you read your own response so as to get a mental picture of it. A A
