BEYOND HUMAN CONNECTIONS:
NATURE AND ANIMALS
Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find
reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.
—Rachel Carson
ur human existence is made possible by our interconnection with the
natural world. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we
drink, the material possessions we own, and the modes of transportation we
use are all examples of how we are intricately connected and rely on the
natural world for our very survival. The plant and animal kingdoms nourish
us beyond our physical needs: they nourish our spirit. Being in touch with
trees, animals, flowers, insects, and the elements help us to forget about
ourselves and our human troubles, if even momentarily, and lift us out of
our distracted and worried minds.
Pause for a moment to reflect on how you feel when you connect with
nature. What memories come to mind of being in nature, recently or in the
past? How do you feel as you reflect on this?
