Bullet Gist – The Subtle Body (Sūkṣma Śarīra)
Sūkṣma Śarīra is the Subtle Body, distinct from the gross physical body.
It is composed of the five great elements before grossification (ungrossified Pancha Mahābhūtas).
It is born of past good actions (Satkarma).
It is the instrument for experiencing joy, sorrow, and all other inner experiences.
The Subtle Body consists of 17 components:
Five Sense Organs (Jñāna Indriyas) – organs of perception
Five Organs of Action (Karma Indriyas) – organs of action
Five Prāṇas – vital energies
One Mind (Manas)
One Intellect (Buddhi)
These 17 factors together constitute the Subtle Body.
The Subtle Body controls and animates the gross body.
Without the Subtle Body, the gross body is lifeless.
Death is the separation of the Subtle Body from the Gross Body.
