Khatu Shyamji

Khatu Shyam Ji is a revered deity in Hinduism, primarily worshipped in Rajasthan and across India. He is considered an incarnation of Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima (one of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata). Devotees believe that Khatu Shyam Ji grants blessings to those who remember him with a sincere heart, especially by chanting “Haare Ka Sahara, Baba Shyam Hamara” (The support of the defeated, Baba Shyam is ours).

Legend of Khatu Shyam Ji (Barbarika)

1. Barbarika’s Boon and Sacrifice

Barbarika was a mighty warrior who possessed three divine arrows (Teen Baan) given by Lord Shiva.

He pledged to fight for the weaker side in any battle.

Before the Kurukshetra war, Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, tested him and realized that Barbarika’s vow would create a paradox—since he would always support the weaker side, he would keep switching sides, prolonging the war indefinitely.

2. Krishna’s Divine Leela

Krishna asked for Barbarika’s head (sheesh-daan) as a sacrifice to ensure Dharma’s victory.

Accepting this divine request, Barbarika willingly offered his head, which Krishna placed on a hilltop.

His severed head witnessed the entire war, and after the battle, Krishna blessed him with the boon that in Kaliyuga, he would be worshipped as Khatu Shyam, the deity who helps the needy and the defeated.
