Guru Purnima

“Bhava Sagara Tarana Karana He” (भवसागर तारण कारण हे) is a devotional prayer (tarana) invoking the Guru as the destroyer of worldly illusion and the guide across life’s ocean of suffering. Commonly sung in Sanskrit/Hindi, it’s a heartfelt plea for divine protection and inner transformation.

भवसागर तारण कारण हे ।

भवसागर तारण कारण हे ।


रविनन्दन बन्धन खण्डन हे ॥

Ravi‑nandana bandhana khaṇḍhana he.


शरणागत किंकर भीत मने ।

śaraṇāgata kiṅkara bhīta mane.


गुरुदेव दया करो दीनजने ॥१॥

Gurudeva dayā karo dīnajane. 


These four lines form the refrain, recited after each verse.


Full 8-verse prayer includes:


  1. Hridikandar tamas bhāskara — calling Guru the light that dispels inner darkness.
  2. Mana-varaṇa śāsana aṅkuśa — Guru as restrainer of the restless mind.
  3. Kulakuṇḍalinī ghum ghanjaka — awakening Kundalini, removing heart-knots.
  4. Ripu-sūdanaṃ maṃgalānāyaka — destroyer of enemies, bestower of peace and security.
  5. Abhimāna prabhāva vimardaka — humbling the proud, protector of the helpless.

  • Tarana Karana: Wisdom, the divine whose grace leads across it.
