HERPETIC GINIGIVOSTOMATITIS

 A

For herpetic gingivostomatitis, early treatment with aciclovir is best—ideally within the first 72 hours of symptom onset to achieve maximum benefit in reducing severity and duration.

How late can you start aciclovir?

  • Optimal window: Within 72 hours (3 days) of symptom onset.

  • Beyond 72 hours: Starting aciclovir may still help reduce symptom duration and viral shedding, but effectiveness decreases the later you begin.

  • If symptoms are very prolonged (>5 days), aciclovir is unlikely to significantly alter the course.

Summary:

  • Start aciclovir ASAP, ideally within the first 3 days.

  • Starting after 72 hours may still provide some benefit, especially in severe cases.

  • No benefit if treatment starts very late (>5 days), but generally still safe.
