Broadly speaking, they may be grouped as traders, artisans and craftsmen, hunters, animal-keepers, performing artists and those concerned with forest products. Some of them were engaged by the king and others might have been self-employed. In addition to these specified groups, there were other unspecified ones like kirāta, mlechha, nişāda, mrtapa, domba, candāla, andhra, pundra, pulinda, ābhira, and śabara.
