  • The National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) thematic report, authored by Amena Warner, Head of Clinical Services at Allergy UK, examines child deaths due to asthma in England from April 2019 to March 2023.

  • A total of 54 child deaths were identified, with an average of one death every four weeks.

  • Adolescents aged 15–17 had the highest mortality rates.

  • Children in the most deprived areas had a death rate four times higher than those in the least deprived areas.

  • Contributing factors to asthma-related deaths included:

    • Over-reliance on short-acting beta-agonist inhalers.

    • Inadequate use of corticosteroid preventers.

    • Exposure to indoor pollutants like mould and pet allergens.

    • Insufficient follow-up care.

  • The report emphasizes the need for:

    • Personalized asthma action plans.

    • Improved healthcare coordination.

    • Targeted interventions to address health disparities.
