One of the biggest myths about dying is that death in and of itself is painful. Well, I have good news for you: this is not true. The disease a person is dying from can cause pain, but actual death itself is not painful. Our bodies are built to be born, and they’re built to die. If someone was to live to be a hundred years old and die naturally of old age without any terminal illness, they most likely would not have any pain at death. However, because most people die from specific diseases, and because the symptoms of those diseases can be painful, many people equate death with pain. Hospice can manage those symptoms for you and help you have a peaceful death. The task of the entire care team is to figure out the best ways to manage the specific pain a person may be feeling, which varies by disease.
